Con Edison of New York’s CEO, Kevin Burke, obtained a compensation package of about $7.3 million in 2008, up from $5.5 million in 2007. Burke's compensation package includes $1.1 million in base pay -- about a 5 percent increase over his 2007 salary -- a performance-based cash bonus of nearly $1.1 million, and restricted stock that was valued by the company at $3.2 million as of January 2008. His pension benefits totaled about $2.7 million, and he also received compensation of $103,256, which included $2,168 for personal use of a company car, $7,470 for driver costs, $10,150 in legal fees and $46,709 for life insurance. Apart from his 2008 compensation, Burke realized about $488,789 from exercising option awards and $987,943 from vesting stock awards from previous years. The largest increase in Burke's compensation package was in his pension plan, which was about $2.7 million in 2008 compared to $1.7 million in 2007 (Padnani, 2009) In 2009 he announced that New York residents will an average $6 per household increase in their Con Ed bill.
